Pediatric Eye Exams
Children’s vision plays a vital role in their learning, development, and overall quality of life. At Vision Care Center, our pediatric eye exams provide comprehensive vision assessments designed specifically for young patients, from infants to teenagers.
Our experienced eye care team understands that children have unique vision needs and may face different eye conditions than adults. Through gentle, age-appropriate examination techniques, we create a comfortable environment where children feel at ease during their eye exams.
Why Pediatric Eye Exams Are Important
Children often don’t realize they have vision problems because they assume everyone sees the world the same way they do. Many vision issues develop gradually, making them difficult for parents and teachers to detect. Regular pediatric eye exams help identify problems early when treatment is most effective.
Vision problems can significantly impact a child’s academic performance, social development, and participation in sports and activities. Early intervention through comprehensive eye exams can address these issues before they become barriers to success.
Many eye doctors recommend that children have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age, followed by exams at age 3, before starting school, and then annually throughout their school years.
Common Pediatric Eye Conditions We Treat
Myopia Management
Myopia, or nearsightedness, makes it difficult so see distant objects clearly. For children, this can affect performance in school and sports. Myopia management can help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children.
Our myopia management approach includes specialized contact lenses, atropine therapy, Essilor® Stellest® lenses, and lifestyle recommendations. These treatments can significantly reduce how quickly myopia progresses, potentially preventing high myopia and its associated risks of serious eye conditions later in life. Regular monitoring allows us to adjust treatment plans as your child grows and their vision needs change.
Essilor® Stellest® lenses are the first and only FDA market authorized spectacle lens to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. This innovative technology is a fantastic option for kids who are unable to achieve myopia management through wearing contact lenses or using atropine eye drops, giving families more choices while maintaining the comfort and convenience of regular glasses.
Only specific offices can offer this advanced technology due to manufacturer requirements. At Vision Care Center, we are currently partnered with Essilor as our glasses lens manufacturer, which allows us to provide this specialized service to children and families in our community.
Early intervention is key to successful myopia management. Signs that your child might be developing myopia include squinting when looking at distant objects, sitting close to the television, having difficulty seeing the board at school, and frequent headaches or eye strain.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is one of the most frequent eye conditions affecting children. This inflammation of the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, or irritants. Determining the type of conjunctivitis is important because treatment varies depending on the cause.
Dr. Bartels can diagnose the specific type of conjunctivitis and offer guidance on preventing the spread of contagious forms, as well as managing symptoms to ensure comfort.
Amblyopia
Amblyopia, often called lazy eye, occurs when one eye doesn’t develop normal vision during childhood. This condition can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated early.
Amblyopia develops when the brain consistently receives a clearer image from one eye than the other, causing it to favor the stronger eye. The most common causes of amblyopia include significant differences in refractive error between the two eyes, eye misalignment (strabismus), and conditions that block light from entering one eye, such as cataracts or droopy eyelids.
Early detection is critical because treatment is most effective when started before age 7, while the visual system is still developing.
Treatment for amblyopia typically involves correcting any refractive errors with glasses and then encouraging the use of the weaker eye. This may include patching the stronger eye for specific periods each day or using eye drops to temporarily blur vision in the stronger eye.
With consistent treatment, most children with amblyopia can develop good vision in both eyes.
